Abundant CountryKatinka Moes10 - 25 June 2022
Emerging artist, Katinka Moes, expresses her love and appreciation for nature with her vibrant style. She draws upon childhood memories growing up in remote Aboriginal community, Gawa, and the privilege of learning about the natural environment from the Yolngu people, an experience for which she is extremely grateful. "Abundant Country" celebrates the beauty of the different habitats of the Northern Territory, and the abundance and diversity of wildlife in our country.

2. Miyapunu (Turtle), 2022
Acrylics and fabric on canvas

One of my favourite animals are turtles. When living on Elcho Island, surrounded by ocean, I had the opportunity of seeing these creatures frequently. Some of my fondest memories were seeing them freely swimming in the ocean, watching the process of them laying eggs, and seeing them hatch. It was something quite special.
3. In the Mangroves, 2022
Acrylic and ink on canvas
45 x 91 x 3.5cm
$290
The mangroves were visited on many weekends and during every holiday. We would wind our way through the tangled roots, searching for mud crabs. Afterwards we would sit down on the beach, by a fire, and enjoy the food we had caught.
The mangrove ecosystem is so amazing and full of life.

I’ve always found the endangered Atlas Moth a beautiful and fascinating creature. Years ago, I had the opportunity to spot this rare beauty during a family road trip through the rainforest. This animal was something quite amazing, I remember being wonderstruck by its huge size and beautiful colours.

8. Earth Weaving, 2022
Acrylic and fabric on canvas
91 x 91 x 3.5cm
$580 SOLD
The inspiration behind this piece was to represent the art of weaving, which is one of the most distinguished traditional forms of art for aboriginal people. The process of weaving is very long but beautiful. In this process you would collect the panadas, strip the sharp sections off, and collect natural dyes from the earth which give each strand their beautiful colour. I wanted to represent some of these colours from the weavings and the bush habitat within the artwork.
9. Double-Barred Finch, 2022
Acrylic on wood
40 x 40 x 2cm
$120
10. Ganguri (Long Yams), 2022
Acrylic on canvas
38 x 91 x 3.5cm
$250
Ganguri is a long yam and is a much-loved food. To find this yam we would look for a very distinct vine that would tell us where the yam would be growing. We would dig deep into the ground to find long yams and cook them on the fire.
11. Collecting Bush Tucker, 2022
Acrylic on canvas
71 x 104 x 3cm
$720 SOLD
In this exhibition I wanted to represent the beautiful indigenous culture here in the NT. I had the special opportunity of working alongside an aboriginal artist from the desert region. Audrey Miller, an artist from Amoonguna, shared her knowledge of bush tucker as we worked together to combine our painting styles. I painted the aboriginal lady and flowers, and Audrey painted the dots in the background and her own bush foods in the coolamon which is a traditional vessel used to carry food.
It was very special to work with Audrey and integrate our painting styles while sharing and comparing stories about bush tucker found in different regions.
